- United Nations Formed
- Churchill's "Iron Curtain" Speech
- NATO Formed
- In June 1945 the UN was formed in response to the conflict during World War II. The US and USSR, put aside their differences along with 48 other countries. However the five main countries with power were the US, USSR, France, Britain and China.
- Warsaw Pact Formed
- Churchill had given a speech on the USSR's recent activity as they have set up a "iron curtain". This curtain was a means of defense against the aggression of Western Europe. The blockade start in East Germany but was later moved to East Berlin.
- Arms Race
- As a result of the aggression shown in World War II, the US and 27 other countries formed NATO. This organization was formed as a defensive military group. Any member that was attacked in NATO would receive protection by the other nations in it.
- Space Race
- In response to the US forming NATO, the USSR formed the Warsaw Pact. Unlike NATO the Pact wasn't voluntary, any country inside of the Iron Curtain was forced into it. The USSR force nations in by threatening them with Russian tanks.
- The tension from World War II lasted after the war had ended and lead to the arms race. The world's two super powers the US and USSR had begun developing nuclear weapons. Both tried to out arm the other in terms of military power.
- Since the US and USSR had already begun testing and creating missiles, they changed their objective of building weapons to going into space. Russia was able to send the first satellite and person into space. However, the US sent the first man to ever be on the moon.
