Chandragupta Maurya married Alexander The Greats' Commander in Chiefs' daughter, Helena Maurya, to gain land in India, which then he named the Mauryan Empire.
A few more years later...
Blah blah... peace... blah blah... buddhism...
Ashoka, one of the kings, was very violent and killed his own brother for the throne. He also had a very bloody war with the Kalinga Empire, that he wanted to conquer.
The peak of the empire...
Their military force was considered very strong too and part of the reason why is because they had war elephants.
Ashoka soon felt very bad for all the atrocious things he did to the Kalinga Empire and his brother, so he decided to convert to Buddhism because it promotes peace.
In the end...
Ashoka wanted to spread his religion and he did this by carving onto rock his thoughts, another way he spread Buddhism was send monks to different empires to say good word about it.
Everyone thought he was the greatest because of his promotion of peace and non violence. His empire was the first to unify most of India with peace and had the largest military force of it's time.
After Ashoka died, each generation of leaders kept getting weaker and weaker until one of them was assassinated by his own general and that was how the Mauryan Empire ended.
