- The confederacy won the battle of Chancellorsville, but, some nervous soldiers shot General Stonewall thinking he was a Union soldier.
- This happened in May of 1863.
- General Grant called for reinforcements in the battle of shiloh on the 7th of April in 1862.
- Because of this they were able to win, as well as take both sides of the Mississippi river.
- They did this by marching inland eastward to launch a surprise attack on Jackson. It was successful.
- On July 4 the Confederates surrendered Vicksburg. After months and months of failing to capture it, the North had successfully captured it.
- On the last day the Union opened fire on the Confederates and killed or injured most of their soldiers. This resulted in a win for the Union.
- The Battle of Gettysburg was a long three day battle. On July 1, the Confederacy drove the Union out of the town.
- The next day, General Lee was unsuccessful in dislodging the Union army.
- The Union's victories in Vicksburg and Gettysburg marked the turning point in the war.
- Still, the South was determined to fight. The war would last another 2 years.
