- José Martí
- During the end of the nineteenth century, Spain as an imperial nation was declining. A Cuban patriot named Jose Marti used rebel fighters to launch a war for independence from Spain. The Spanish then deprived the rebels of food and resources in response to the rebels.

- The yellow press included publications in favor of the dislike of the Spanish government. The US warned the Spanish to create peace with Cuba or the US would get involved. This eventually fueled Jingoism, or American nationalism and aggression against Spain.
- The ship, Maine, exploded in the Havana harbor. President McKinley requested to investigate the causes of the explosion. Many people at the time blamed the explosion on Spain.
- In response to American demands, Spain agreed to make other concessions. However, in 1898, the US had already decided to use force against Spain, to end fighting in Cuba. 8 days later congress declaimed war on Spain.
- In 1898, George Dewey steamed vessels in Manila Bay, which was Spanish held Philippines. After that victory, Emilio Aguinaldo along with Filipino nationalists defeated the Spanish army. Spanish troops then surrendered to the US.
- The Rough Riders
- In 1898, the US captured the Guantanamo Bay and stormed east of Santiago. President Roosevelt created a group who were rugged easterners and upper class easterners who relished the “strenuous” life. These people were called Rough Riders. Spanish forces surrendered to the US in Cuba.
- The Treaty of Paris was signed in order to officially end the war. This was signed by Spain and the US in December, 1898. Spanish gave control of Cuba. Puerto Rico, and the Island of Guam up and sold the Philippines.
- Many people argued that if the US didnt take control of the Philippinesm another country would take control. The American Anti-Imperialist League was formed to bring awareness that imperialism is a crime. In February, 1899, Senators considered ratifying the Treaty of Paris. Finally, they voted in favor of the treaty.
