- Garp has been married to Helen for eleven years and he has stopped writing after experiencing severe writers block.
- Duncan, now ten years old, comes home from school one day and asks Garp if he can stay the night at his friend Ralph's house. Despite Garp's reluctance, he allows Duncan to go to his friend's house.
- Can I please go to Ralph's house?
- Garp has become extremely obsessive about the safety of his children and he decides to run to Ralph's house to check on Duncan
- Before Garp brings Duncan home in the middle of the night, Ralph's mom asks Garp to come into the house and she tries to seduce him.
- Helen is furious with Garp when he and Duncan return home, adding to the frustration that she has already been feeling with him recently.
- Soon after this event, Helen meets Michael Milton, a new student of hers, and they have an affair.
