Hello! My name is Shebnah, and I'd like to share about boxing today!

Boxing has been a part of my life for quite some time. I started boxing when I was 14 years old.

Going to a boxing session.
Where are you going?
There was a time where there was a family gathering at my house, and I had originally planned to go practice on the same day, so I spent some time with my family first then decided to get ready to go practice at a boxing gym. As soon as I was ready to leave, some aunts had asked me where I was headed to, and I mentioned that I was going to the boxing gym, and as soon as I said that they looked at me with disgust and concern.

Your aunts say boxing is a man's sport.
My dad had told me how my aunts were telling him how women don’t box, and it is something that a troubled child would pursue boxing, and how I would be looking for trouble. Sadly, because my family viewed the sport as too masculine for women, I had to quit boxing. That was when I realized just how misunderstood the sport had become.

Meaning that boxing is not all about hitting your opponent harder, instead it relies on “technique, timing, and strategy”.

Another big misconception is that women can’t box. As a woman myself, I strongly disagree. Just like how men can play any sport, we can do the same too. According to the article, The Struggles of Women’s Boxing to Gain Respect by WBAN writes, “ From its earliest days, female fighters faced ridicule, legal bans, and cultural stereotypes that sought to keep them out of the sport” (WBAN,2025). Though this is in the past because, “ Today, women’s boxing has gained recognition in both amateur and professional circuits. Strength, agility, and strategy define a good boxer more than gender”(Gregorio,n.d).

Women can't box! That's such a disgrace!
Unfortunately, the acceptance of boxing has ways to go in cultural communities.

As the interest drew close to me as it made me go into a different state of mind where I can get away from all the noise that’s around me. A sport that helped me snap into a different dimension where nothing around me mattered. Just me and the boxing gloves.
Though these boxing stereotypes are not the greatest, my experience with boxing is otherwise. Boxing allows me to transcend into a different mindset, giving me comfort and peace when I need it. Boxing is a place where I can leave my worries behind and focus on improving myself both physically and mentally

Through boxing, I have learned discipline, perseverance, confidence, and self-control. Rather than making me aggressive or encouraging me to look for trouble, boxing has taught me how to channel my energy in a positive way. It has become a part of my identity and has helped shape the person I am today.

I had then left to go to the boxing gym, completed the session and came back home.

Looking back at the family gathering, I wish my family had understood boxing the way I do. Instead of seeing it as a sport for troubled people or believing that women should not participate, I wish they had seen the dedication, discipline, and hard work that boxing requires, and that the sport is not subjected to men alone, women can play any sport, especially boxing. If they had understood boxing beyond the stereotypes, they may have viewed my passion differently, and I would’ve continued boxing by now.

Boxing is a sport, however it has been misinterpreted to be something else. For example boxing is known for who hits harder in a rink. According to the article called 10 Common Boxing Misconceptions You Should Stop Believing written by Jomer Gregorio, it is written that “Many think success in boxing depends on delivering the hardest punches. Technique, timing, and strategy matter more than brute force. Proper stance, movement, and defensive awareness often determine outcomes, proving that skill outweighs sheer strength. Those who focus solely on building muscle might overlook crucial abilities that define the sport” (Gregorio,n.d).
Boxing is more than just a sport to me, it is a source of strength, growth, and self-discovery.
