  • Dorothea Dix
  • Hello, I'm Dorothea Dix how are you doing today. *Nervous*
  • I'm doing good Dix thank you for asking I'm Rob. *Twitching*
  • Prison Reform 1841
  • Mental ill prisoner
  • The conditions at the jails and the prisons were the cells were dirty and crowded. I need more information.
  • This reform was needed because the prisoners were not being treated well and the conditions of the cells were bad.
  • My reform
  • This prison changed a lot of things they banned putting debtors in prison who own people money.
  • And lawmakers voted to create a public asylum for the mental ill and they did that so they could care for the mental ill.
  • Other states also created mental ill hospitals to try and help them.
  • The person who was doing this reform was Dorothea Dix. One day in 1841 Dix agreed to teach Sunday school at jail.
  • And then she and other states created a mental ill hospital for the mental and for the rest of her life. She made more information and continued campaigning for prison for the rest of her life until she died in 1887
  • That day changed her life after what she had say. When she was there many prisoners were in chains and locks in cages. Children were accused of minor thief's were jailed with adult criminals.
  • She visited hundreds of jails and prisons throughout Massachusetts trying to figure out her answer to her question.
  • She was shocked by the way that the mental ill people were treated their cells were dirty can the cells were crowded. If they were bad they would be whipped and others believed that they shouldn't be treated like that.
  • Thank you, I really needed it. The people will be happy I hope we win this.
  • Hey, I have heard a lot about you I work as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. I could help you on your prison reform and help to fight slavery so all children can go to the same school.
  • Thaddeus Stevens
  • No problem Dorothea Dix I always wanted to help people and you proved to me that we can give rights to the African Americans.
  • Thank you, so much Thaddeus Stevens we won the right for all colored children to go to the same public school.
