Japan wanted Asia to be free from Western Imperialism and believed they should be the leaders of Asia. Japan needed to wage war against colonial powers to create the Greater East Asia Prosperity Sphere.
Manchuria provided cheap manpower and raw materials such as grain, gold, iron, coal, and timber. They had lots of land for farming, whereas Japan was mostly mountainous and there was not enough food or land to keep up with the population increase. There was also a potential overseas market for Japanese goods.
Members of the Japanese Army bombed a train on its way to Mukden, killing Manchurian Warlord Zhang Zuo-Lin in 1928.
On September 18th, 1931, a train carrying Japanese passengers exploded due to Japanese forces, yet Japan blamed the incident on China.

6 months later, Manchuko was recognized by the Tokyo government. The prime minister crticized it but was unable to do anything as the the army now had enough influence and power to act without permission.
