In Mesopotamia each city state had a special God looking after it. At first the temples were in charge of what jobs people did but later the kings took more control by taking land from the temples and using the temples workers for their own projects. Overtime Kings gave land and money to their friends which made a new market not controlled by kings or temples this meant that traders craftsman can do their own things
