  • After bad harvests and costly wars, King Louis XVI is forced to convene this ancient assembly to raise taxes. During the election process, voters traditionally draft petitions of grievance. When taxes were raised, it caused the commoners to become angry since the rich were still living lavishly.

  • On 20 June 1789, the members of the French Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath in the tennis court which had been built in 1686 for the use of the Versailles palace. The vote was "not to separate and to reassemble wherever necessary until the Constitution of the kingdom is established".

  • On October 5, 1789, crowds of Parisian women met at City Hall to demand bread and when they were refused marched the 12 miles to Versailles to confront the royal family. After relating their need to Louis, he promised the women that he would send grain to Paris.
