Reading this helped me understand the strength it takes as a parent not only to care for a child with a disability but to advocate for their well-being and fight for their right to participate in all that life has to offer.
Gina's mom fought for Gina to be placed in a general preschool with Ms.Kathy, where she flourished for years. Then again, the mother fought for Gina to be placed in a different program where they focused more on helping her improve her socialization, interaction, and communication. Both times, the schools were reluctant and had no faith in Gina, and both times Gina thrived and improved the school community.
The presentation helped me see the wonderful support that Gina has. She is surrounded by friends, family, and therapists, who want Gina to live a good and fulfilled life. This gave me a better understanding of what her life has been like over the years, what she has done, where she goes, and what she has done in her therapy sessions.
