  • Good morning, April! I hope you had a great first week. I wanted to let you know that your supervising SLP will not be here today.
  • Good morning! Oh no! I hope everything is okay. Will she be back soon?
  • Let's go to the office, and I will fill you in more there.

  • Unfortunately your supervisor has become seriously ill and has taken an extended medical leave which means I am going to need you to take over her caseload.
  • What?? I can't do that! I've only had a week of training that only consisted of paperwork and observing!
  • What do I say?? I don't want to get in trouble for working outside my scope of practice!

  • I know the students need to be seen, but I am still in the first 90 days of work and cannot see students without at least 20% supervision according to OBESPA guidelines.
  • And according to ASHA, if a supervisor is unable to supervise for more than a week, I as the SLPA cannot work.
  • I also am unable to administer any assessments or write any formal documents as an SLPA.

  • Oh, I was not aware of those rules. Is there anything I can do that will allow you to still be able to work?
  • Yes! If you can find a new SLP to supervise me while the other is on leave, I can still work!

  • Great! I will bring on another SLP to supervise while the other is on leave so we can keep you working and our students get their services!
  • That sounds perfect! Thank you for understanding and helping me work within my scope!
  • Thank you for educating me on what the rules and guidelines are for an SLPA!
