- Upon taking Mrs. Hopes case, Lucy and Lockwood accidentally burned down her house. She wasn't happy, and wanted them to pay for damages. Lockwood assumed that DEPRAC (a company in charge of the agencies) would cover it, but instead Lockwood & Co had to produce £60,000 in four weeks.
- Lucy had secretly kept the necklace found near Annabel's remains, and after she showed her partners, they discovered an engraving on the back, as well as hearing memories from it, that pointed them in the direction of Annabel's killer. Lockwood figured that if they made it public that they were solving the murder, they might get more cases, which would lead to more money. So, he put it in the newspaper.
- When John Fairfax, head of the infamous Fairfax Iron company, asked Lockwood & Co to take the case, things started looking up for them. Mr. Fairfax offered to pay them the £60,000 plus twice what they usually charge. The only conditions were that the case was notoriously difficult and deadly, and Lockwood & Co had only 48 hours to prepare.
