When Joseph found out that Mary was pregnant, he was going to quietly call off the engagement, as to not bring embarrassment to Mary.
Before Joseph could leave Mary, an angel of the Lord came to him in his sleep and said, " Joseph, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife. The child she carries is from God. She will bear a son and you will call him Jesus."
When Josep awoke, he did what the angel of the Lord told him to do, although he and Mary didn't get married until after the birth of the baby boy that they named Jesus.
