Welcome back class! The menstrual cycle is the monthly series of changes a woman's body goes through in preparation for the possibility of pregnancy. Each month, one of the ovaries releases an egg — a process called ovulation. At the same time, hormonal changes prepare the uterus for pregnancy. In the flow phase, the first phase, the flow occurs when the lining of the uterus detaches from the uterine wall, and passes through the vagina to the outside of the body, mucus and blood are expelled and cramps occur. The level of FSH rises and a follicle in the ovaries matures.
Stage 1: Flow Phase

In the second stage, the follicular phase, it lasts about 6 to 14 days the level of estrogen in the blood is very low. Hormones from the hypothalamus stimulate the pituitary to release more FSH and LH, causing ovulation and the uterus lining to thicken.
Stage 2: Follicular Phase
THANK YOU PROFESSOR!
Stage 3: Luteal Phase
In the luteal phase, the release of hormones is time to stop at production and to develop the endometrium to receive a fertilized egg. After ovulation, the empty follicle turns yellow and is called a corpus luteum, it releases estrogen and another hormone limiting the production of LH and FSH and increasing the blood vessels in the lining of the uterus. The corpus luteum then sheds, breaking down and stopping secreting estrogen and progesterone causing the uterus line to shed and the flow phase to restart.
