  • Dr. Drew had a lot of firsts for African Americans. He was not only the first black physician in the Red Cross, but first black head of the Red Cross. He successfully instituted his blood life-saving measures to aid in WWI!
  • Toni wrote numerous books from the African American perspective that gained her national acclaim. Fun fact: she graduated with a Master's degree from Cornell University.
  • Ms. Walker began as an orphan, but she worked hard her whole life. When she was 20, she invented what today would be a hair straightener. Her process for making black women's hair smooth caught on and she quickly became a millionaire who helped fund the Harlem Renaissance.
