Kansas became known as Bleeding Kansas. After the Kansas‑Nebraska Act, proslavery and antislavery settlers flooded into Kansas to influence the vote. Violence erupted towns were attacked, homes burned, and John Brown led a deadly raid at Pottawatomie Creek. Kansas became a battleground over slavery, symbolizing the growing national crisis.

Kansas‑Nebraska Act created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and allowed settlers to vote on slavery. This repealed the Missouri Compromise, which had banned slavery north of the 36°30′ line. Northerners were furious, believing the act would expand slavery westward.
