Een thema is een centraal idee, onderwerp of bericht in een verhaal. Veel verhalen hebben meer dan één belangrijk thema. Voor deze activiteit zullen leerlingen de thema's in Sounder identificeren en illustreren. Leraren willen misschien dat de leerlingen twp-thema's identificeren en illustreren, één voor elke cel, of één thema identificeren, en er twee voorbeelden van laten zien, één voorbeeld per cel.
De naam van de hond, Sounder, is de enige naam in het hele boek. Het gezin wordt als arm geïdentificeerd, maar dat is hun enige identiteit. Voor het gezin is Sounder belangrijk, maar voor de wereld is het gezin onbelangrijk en heeft het geen identiteit.
Sounder is een onverschrokken en loyale hond. Een voorbeeld hiervan is wanneer hij de wagen achtervolgt terwijl zijn meester naar de gevangenis wordt afgevoerd.
De jongen wordt gedwongen snel volwassen te worden als zijn vader wordt weggehaald. Hij moet zijn jongere broers en zussen helpen grootbrengen en voor zijn gezin zorgen.
De jongen is erg moedig. Hij gaat op zoek naar zijn vader en raakt er zelfs door gewond. Hij geeft ook nooit zijn droom op om te leren lezen en schrijven.
