Dit proces kijkt naar factoren zowel binnen als buiten het bedrijf, en gebruikt vaak een SWOT-analyse, of een soortgelijk kader, om de gegenereerde informatie te organiseren. Strategische planning die externe factoren onderzoekt, heet milieu-scanning.
