Anglo (White) settlers forced Native Americans into reservations to easily take control of the open land for other settlers. They divided tribes, separated families, and quickly worked to control their lives. These reservations were known as the concentration policy and the lands were infertile and unfamiliar. President Ulysses S. Grant supported the policy and claimed it was their duty to "civilize" Native Americans while also demolishing their rights and independence.

In order to fully take control of all Native Americans, federal government destroyed the Plains tribes' main food source. This event is known as the Decimation of the Buffalo and many soldiers/hunters slaughtered and killed millions of buffalo to make tribes weak. (some tribes included the Sioux and Cheyenne). Because of this, Native Americans were forced to rely on federal government aid and live in reservations for survival.
