The country was still suffering from the Great Depression. Some Americans also thought that the U.S should stay out of a conflict being fought so far.
Dec. 7th, 1941 The Japanese bombed American naval base at pear harbor in Hawaii
1. In 1941, The U.S military had only 1.5 mil soldiers. The army needed six times that amount. For the first time the country would call upon women and minorities for help.
992 pilots graduated and they set out to prove the military wrong!
3. January 16, 1941, the army agreed to form an all black squadron. These men would train at Moton and the new Tuskegee Army Air Field.
This was called the "Tuskegee Experiment"
2. Black people wanted to join the air force because they were in need of many pilots but the U.S military was not convinced of their ability. Black people wanted to use the war to help put an end to racism at home.
