The opening of the cervix is called dilation. Effacement means that the cervix stretches and gets thinner. This is also when the bloody show occurs.STAGE 1 part 2 - Transition PhaseThis phase is the final part of the active phase of labor. The transition is from about 8 to 10 centimeters, or full dilation. Strong contractions will occur every 2 to 3 minutes and last for about 60 to 90 seconds.

Stage 2 - PushingThis stage starts after the cervix is dilated and it continues until the baby is finished moving through the vagina. During this stage lightning also occurs. This is when the baby moves to a lower position in the belly so the mother can push it out. During this stage crowning also occurs when the doctors see the top of the babies head through the opening. Once the baby crowns the rest of the body will be pushed out.
