Storyboard Tekst

  • Storyboard briefly depicting the history of Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) by Teddy Zhao
  • In the 1650s to the 1750s, the Tamaki tribes flattened ground around volcano cones and built pa around them. Not much wars going on, so everything was pretty peaceful and well.
  • During 1740 and 1750 Ngati Whatua-o-Kaipara had moved south and invaded the isthmus, killing a chief named Kiwi Tamaki, who was a leader of Wai-o-Hua. The conquerers then secured their rule by intermarrying with descendants of Wai-o-Hua.
  • In 1750, it was the peak of prosperity and the population was in the 5 digits. Tribes had already developed 2,000 hectares of kumara gardens, which was huge (1 hectare is equal to 10000 square metres)
  • 1821 was a bloody year. Ngapuhi leader Hongi Hika, wanting to avenge previous losses against Tamaki tribes, launched a series of attacks and raids on the region. With 2000 men and 1000 muskets he stormed two pa that belonged to Ngati Paoa, Mauinaina and Mokoia, where he killed hundreds and enslaved hundreds more. Ngapuhi repeated the massacre at the Ngati Maru fortress which laid near Thames.
  • The violence was repeated at Ngati Whatua in 1825 by Ngapuhi. This battle was known as Te Ika-a-ranganui, and was fought near Kaiwaka. The defenders which numbered a thousand were still defeated by Ngapuhi's force of 500 who were armed with better weapons. The chief of Ngati Whatua abandoned their land, taking his people into exile.
