- The angel that was invited into their house was unkempt and smelly, but his dad welcomes him anyways. After he had given him clothes, food, and shelter, he repaid them with all he had; a rainbow-colored address book. By showing the man's poor condition and his dad's generosity despite that, the reader can feel the sympathy that Mawi's father has for people.
- Mawi and Tewolde's angel would pick them up and take them to soccer and the playground. She would also sing songs to them with her guitar. She also taught them of the lamp that guides all paths, even if they were just kids. This imagery shows a silver lining in an otherwise trouble-filled childhood.
- Mawi and Tewolde had gotten into many conflicts with other boys, but Sam, the overweight 3rd grader, had given Mawi trouble. With no supervisors in sight, Sam pressed his weight into Mawi against the fence, suffocating him. When Tewolde catches word, he runs up behind Sam and hits him until he is bloody. This imagery is used to show the bond between the two brothers.
- After a while, the boys keep getting into fights and the school intervenes. They then sent a paper to their dad explaining how they will expel them if this continues. Furious, he tells his kids that they no longer live in Sudan and that their actions will stain their records in America. He tells them that they have no other choice but to turn the other cheek or he will "Make them lost". This imagery emphasizes how important their father was in shaping them.
- Jake Evans, the scariest kid in school, had decided that his target is Tewolde. He was naturally scared, primarily due to his illegal-length switch blade. When the day came, he got cornered walking home from school by Jake and his clique. He makes a quick prayer, hoping they don't use their knifes. This imagery builds some of the suspense before resolving.
- Just then, a van pulled up and 4 black men jumped out of it. They immediately confronted Jake for threatening his "brother". Jake is now cowering as they tell him that if they ever touch Tewolde again they would be dead meat. The guys who saved him were actually Kawaun's brothers. This imagery shows how quickly people change when power isn't present
