  • The story of Frankenstein begins with the captain of a ship named Robert Walton, who at the time was stuck in the Arctic as the water around him froze. Throughout his journey, Walton has been sending letters to his sister about meeting a friend: "I greatly need a friend (Shelley 5), and later Walton's crewmates see a man near death and pull him aboard; this man is Victor Frankenstein, and after he gets better, he starts to share his story.

  • Victor Frankenstein is a fellow from Geneva who had an interest in philosophy and science. Therefore, he made the long trek to Ingolstadt, where he met Master Waldman, a professor who taught Frankenstein how to bring dead organs and tissues back to life. During one stormy night in Frankenstein's lab, he created his first creature. Frankenstein was happy with joy that his studies had paid off but also scared of what he had created. Frankenstein was overwhelmed with emotion and decided to get a night's rest, but as he entered his lab in the morning, the creature was gone.

  • On a nice day in the mountains of Geneva, Frankenstein was on a walk through the mountains when all of a sudden a tall, scary being appeared in front of him. Right away he knew what it was and stated, "Begone, vile insect" (Shelley 86), but all the monster wanted to do was tell his story. After some convincing, Frankenstein agreed to let the monster share his story.

  • The creature's story started out with him explaining how he watched over a family and learned many things and life skills by observing the family throughout this time. “I had admired the perfect forms of my cottagers,” said the creature (Shelley 101).

  • As well, during the creature's story, he states that “ I found on the ground a leather portmanteau contains several articles… and some books” (Shelley 116), which he used to further teach himself life skills and increase the creature's intelligence.

  • As well mentioned in the creature's story about the day he talked to the blind man. He waited until the children of the house left and soon knocked and entered but at first sat there in silence thinking, “ I knew that every minute was precious to me” (Shelley 122), knowing he had limited time to talk to the blind man.

  • Throughout the conversation the creature was having with the blind man, all of a sudden the children of the home returned. Upon entering, the two females stood there screaming while the boy went to attack Frankenstein to keep the blind man safe. While this was happening, the creature got up and ran away, knowing that he needed to find his creator and confront him.

  • While the creature was making his long journey from the mountains to Geneva, he decided to give human interaction one more chance with a little boy whom he thought would be too young to see the creature's hideousness. The creature approaches the young boy, but he begins to scream at the sight of the creature. To stop this, the creature chokes the boy, eventually killing him. This boy was William Frankenstein, brother of Victor Frankenstein.

  • After the monster finished his story of his encounters with the blind man and his family, the valuable skills he developed along the way, and the encounter with William Frankenstein. He exclaimed misery and demanded, “ My companion must be of the same species and have the same defects. This being you must create.” (Shelley 113) or else the creature would continue to torture Frankenstein and his family.

  • Thus Frankenstein made the journey to find a small cottage away from society to set up his lab, where over the span of several months he began to create his lab with his chemicals and science equipment while also gathering the tissues, limbs, and organs to construct a companion for the creature per his demands.

  • After several months of working on his new creature, he came to a sudden realization that he could not create another creature like the one already existing, so he “tore to pieces the thing on which I was engaged” (Shelley 156) and packed up his belongings and science equipment and fled.

  • While Frankenstein was fleeing, he encountered the creature, who was furious after just witnessing the companion that was meant for him, which was just torn to pieces. The creature asked why he would destroy the creature on which he had been working for months, in which Frankenstein stated he would never create a wretch as ugly as the creature. In response, the creature said, “ I shall be with you on your wedding night” (Shelley 158).

  • Therefore, Frankenstein gathered his belongings and science equipment and set sail, not knowing where he was going or how long it would take but enough to escape from the creature.

  • After many days of sailing, Frankenstein ended up at a port not knowing where he was, but waiting there were the police. Frankenstein was clueless on what he could have done to involve the police.

  • Following Frankenstein docking his boat, the police lead him to an area where he saw his best friend, Henry Clerval, dead on the ground, and “ I gasped for a breath and threw myself on the body” (Shelley 167). Then the police apprehended Frankenstein as they had a suspicion he was the one responsible for the murder.

  • Frankenstein was then led to a jail cell where he would be held for several months until his court date. In this time, Frankenstein started to lose his sanity as he had to come to the fact his best friend had passed away and the overall conditions he was living in the jail cell.

  • The time finally came for the day of Frankenstein's court hearing, which had been attended by his father, who had made the trek from Geneva to the unknown land Frankenstein was being held in. After a long court hearing, Frankenstein was found not guilty of the death of Henry Clerval and was set free.

  • Following the release of Frankenstein, he and his father made the sail back to Geneva, where Frankenstein’s father kept a close eye on him, as he wasn’t in the best of conditions.

  • After some time of being back in Geneva and recovering, the day came of Frankenstein's wedding, where he was scared as he knew the creature was watching. He would be marrying a woman named Elizabeth. But will he reveal the truth about his time in Iglostadt and the creature he had created and that he was responsible for the murders of William and Clerval?
