- WHAT - what this event entails
- This is a project about the details of this raid - it answers the who, what, when, where, why, and how questions.
- WHERE AND WHEN - place / time it occured
- The key players of this event were John Brown, his three sons, and about 18 other men. Also present before the revolt was Brown's daughter and his sons wife. Brown was a white man who was pro abolition. He believed that the horror of slavery was worth dying for to abolish, so he started to plan a revolt to prove this.
- WHY - the historical significance of this event

- This event was John Brown's attempt at freeing slaves in a slave state. He created a plan with his group and together they took hostages, got into fights with marine and militia, surrendered twice, and many people were injured or killed.
- HOW - the resolution / decision
- Throughout the summer John Brown and his army gathered at the farmhouse.October 16: Brown and 18 of his men come out of hiding to go towards Harpers ferry and actually commit the raidOctober 17: Townspeople fight back against the raiders October 18: Early Oliver Brown dies, Brown refuses to surrender to LT JEB Stuart, raiders are captured and Watson Brown next day.December 2: Brown was executed.
- Many people said that this raid was what made people realize that the Civil War was going to be an actual physical altercation rather than simply a contradiction of ideas. When somebody was willing to die to stop slavery, people knew how important this issue really was to America.
- John Brown and 6 of his men were captured and taken to court. It lasted 5 days and they were tried for murder, conspiring with enslaved people to rebel, and treason against Virginia. They were charged guilty and sentenced to hanging but 5 of his men escaped.
