  • Students please choose your partners the science project.
  • Justin is a 6th grade student with Autism. He often struggles in the areas of communication skills, motor skills and social cognition
  • He has anxiety about working with peers because tease him. It takes him longer than his peers to process information. A recent study by the Interactive Autism Network (IAN) showed that 63% of children with autism have been bullied at some point in their lives.
  • Why is he looking over here at us? I don't want Justin in our group.
  • Oh no... Justin is going to ask if he can work with us. I hope Jessica isn't going to say anything mean to him.
  • Verbal bullying includes teasing, name calling, inappropriate sexual comments, taunting, and threatening to cause harm.
  • No, Justin you can't work with us you're stupid and too slow. You're only going to get in our way! 
  • Umm?... Can I?....
  • Alice was selected by her teacher as a peer mentor. Peer mentoring is a strategy where selected groups of peers are assigned to 'look out' for vulnerable students.
  • According to Pacer, more than 50 percent of bullying situations stop when peer intervene.
  • Jessica! That was rude. Justin does not deserve to get treated that way.  And he is not stupid! He has autism. He has different strengths and weaknesses just like you do!
  • School wide climate change, peer groups, and peer mentoring interventions are crucial strategies fostering empathy and creating a positive social emotional environment for students with special needs.
