Baba gets really sick and ends up into the hospital. While the doctor and Amir are talking about what will happen, Baba gets a visitor. General visits Baba to comfort him and to see if he needs anything.
"You shouldn't have burdened yourselves. All of you" (160).
"No burden at all. More importantly, do you need anything?" (160).
"I said I did. I'd become conversant in cancer talk" (159).
"He'll have to take steroids to reduce the swelling in his brain and anti-seizure medications. And I'd recommend palliative radiation. Do you know what that means?" (159).

Baba goes to ask the General if Amir can marry his daughter, Soraya. General says yes and Amir is excited to hear the news. Him and Soraya talk about the good news on the phone shortly after.

"Not tonight...There is no pain tonight" (173).
Soraya helps Baba get to sleep but Baba thinks that this will be it. Later in the morning they find out that Baba had died in his bed.
