- The Gestapo invade Josef house in the middle of the night and take their father away
- Josef and his family leave Germany after their father gets out of the concentration camp
- The MS St. Louis is docked off shore for a while until they are told to leave and find refuge elsewhere
- The MS St. Louis has to head back to Europe to find refuge in different countries besides Germany. Josef and his family are still on the ship but Josef dad jumped overboard in Cuba and was taken ashore
- Josef and his family are placed in France for refuge after the MS St. Louis dropped them off.
- Josef and his family are caught by the nazis again and their mother has to choose to save Josef or Ruthie.
