  • It first start as caterpillars, which stops eating and just decides to hung upside down from a leaf and spin to form the cocoon.

  • The cocoon is a protective case that transforms the caterpillars body.
  • Eventually a butterfly emerges
  • Camouflage is one of the ways butterflies show adaptation to avoid their predators.
  • In butterflies, Natural selection is much more stronger in males than in females.
  • Predators are less likely to attack animals that have the same or similar colours as their surroundings.

  • Many butterflies close their wings because the borders are a more neutral colour than the vibrant colours of their wings.
  • Many depend on camouflage to survive. There is a process of blending and adapting to their environment.

  • The name of the system is Batesian mimicry. A predator will avoid the mimic thinking that they encountered a poisonous butterfly, instead of a non-poisonous butterfly.

  • The genetic variation of butterflies are mainly based by the color of their scales, their size and shape too.

  • Both sexes respond to colors when courting, but males strongly resist to colour changes.
  • Female butterflies store sperm and are fertile after one mating. As to the male, the reproductive success is proportional to the number of times he mates.
