  • Story of a Nitrogen Atom
  • It's a sunny, peaceful day in the forest. This little bird is seen eating this nice berry that he stole from this berry bush. How wonderful. It seems the bird is alone, and needs to get back to his flock of other birds before he gets even more lost. This plant absorbed nitrates from the ground into the plant, which will make sense in the story soon.
  • INSIDE THE STOMACHAs the bird is digesting the berry, we meet a little Nitrogen atom, named Quandale. Quandale is an atom who just wants to experience a normal life as a Nitrogen atom.

  • Once the bird digests and takes all of the nutrients out of the berries, it excretes the waste, including Quandale. The waste also coinsidently landed on a tree sapling. As time goes on, bacteria decomposes this waste due to ammonification. The bacteria in the soil also turns the nitrogen into ammonia, through the process of nitrogen fixation. Also, the bacteria changes this ammonia into nitrates, so it is able to be used by plants, in the process of Nitrification. The excess nitrogen will return to the atmosphere, to reset the cycle.

  • After much more time, a tree sprouted from the soil with bird poop. Assimilation also occurred, where the roots of the tree absorb the nitrates in the soil. The tree then uses these nitrates to produce proteins and amino acids.

  • To summarize, Nitrogen travels throughout all types of life, including decomposers, producers, and consumers. So Quandale will be able to scavenge throughout the Nitrogen cycle for millions of years.
