  • The History of Language
  • Many scholars have argued about the origin of language and where it came from. Did it come from animals, Adam, or are humans born with the natural ability to speak and create a language? Come with me on a journey through Chapter 2!
  • Language starts from as early as 10 months old. Communication for an adolescent begins with gestures and eventually builds into speech the older a child gets. Language also holds deep and historical meaning, as it reveals ones identity. This can be seen through migration and geographical impacts

  • The History of Language
  • Migration played a vital role in language, as it tells a story of a person's true identity and culture. It allows us to remember where we came from and where we are now. Geography also impacts language as it varies by where people originate from. Language is extremely diverse and was created from an array of different places.

  • First Language Acquisition
  • there are 3 different perspectives on first language acquisition, lets take a look!
  • The Behaviorist Position:This position believes that language is developed by conditioning. It is habit based and is reinforced daily by others. However, this idea relies heavily on human interaction which is not always available, therefore many disagree with the theory.

  • The Nativist Position:The Nativist position believes that language is not determined by one's environment, but formed by a predetermined schedule that all humans have in their genetic makeup.
  • The Functional Position:This position states that children take both environmental and cognitive factors together to form their language, not just one or another.

  • Teaching Methods
  • Let's take a look at some of the best teaching methods for second language acquisition.
  • The Input Hypothesis:The Input Hypothesis suggests that when true comprehension is obtained, speaking skills will naturally form. Speech must be specifically structured in a way that grows a child's level of comprehension. This can be done by parents and teachers that carefully structure sentences that create valuable conversations that impact the child.

  • Teaching Methods
  • The Total Physical Response Method:This method states that language comprehension can be achieved by doing physical actions. by saying commands in English and having a non- English speaking student physically do the command, the student is able to retain a strong comprehension of new vocabulary.
  • That's my summary of Chapter 2! This is the end of the journey, goodbye!
