District West of Washington Square, New York- Sue and Johnsy met at the café. They shared a common interest and later on decided to live together in an art colony in Greenwich Village.
Falling Action
In the month of November, Johnsy got pneumonia as confirmed by the doctor. When the last ivy leaf fell, Johnsy assumed she would die. Sue then informed Behrman of Johnsy's problem.
Resolution
The last leaf suppressed Johnsy's hopelessness. When she noticed the last leaf had survived the rain and wind, she realizes something and the story took a turn. Johnsy learnt a lot lesson from the last leaf that it is sin to want to die.
"Something has made that last leaf to stay there to show me how wicked I was. It is a sin to want to die."
The doctor told Sue that Johnsy would recover but Behrman caught pneumonia himself and his case is helpless.
"She's out of danger. You won. Nutrition and care now- that's all."
Sue told Johnsy that Behrman sacrificed his life for the sake to save her.
"Didn't you wonder why it never fluttered when the wind blew? Ah, darling, it's Behrman's masterpiece- he painted it there the night the last leaf fell."
