  • I declare this land for France.
  • Is that a passage!
  • In 1534, the French king sent an experienced sailor and navigator, Jacques Cartier, to find a quicker route from Europe to Asia. This route would become known as the Northwest Passage.
  • Go to the waterway and map it out for me.
  • As Cartier was sailing west to Newfoundland, he entered a large gulf through a strait. He claimed the land for France.
  • Befor returning to France, Cartier discovered a waterway leading west from Newfoundland.
  • I love new France!
  • One year later, King Francis met with Cartier to have him map the waterway he discovered the previous year.
  • As you wish my king.
  • With the American Indians as his guide, Cartier sailed as far as he could and landed in present-day Quebec. Some of the American Indians came back to France with Cartier and told the king of the riches farther west.
  • In 1541, a third and final voyage was made by Cartier along with a large group of settlers. Their mission was to set up a French empire in North America. The trip ended with their return to France in 1542 after a harsh winter. Cartier had staked claim for France in North America. Sucess was made!
