Stephen traveled by a steamboat and on the map he labeled the area for Kansas to become "The Great American Desert." That view of Kansas stuck and also influenced the us government's settlement policies.
Jackson wants to make a change as in a country covered with forests and ranged by a few thousand savages to our extensive republic. Also filled with all the blessings of liberty, civilization and religion.
The U.S. government didn't think Americans could form or survive because of the explorers description of Kansas. Tensions rise between tribes.
