Nick is a Guardian who helps do physical chores around the house and drive the commander around. At first, Offred is suspicious that he is an Eye, although she eventually starts a sexual relationship with him. The household is desperate for a baby because fertility holds so much importance in Gilead. Nick then helps Offred escape Gilead when the time comes.

Ofglen is a Handmaid who walks with Offred when they go shopping. Handmaid's walk in pairs so they can be each others spy. Ofglen turns out to be working for a resistance movement, although this takes time to be revealed as the two handmaids are too scared of each others piousness. Eventually the "Eyes" find out about Ofglen so she hangs herself before she is tortured.

Commander Waterford is the head of the household in which Offred lives. He is a relatively important commander in Gilead although he still has strict rules to follow. He keeps a bible in a locked box to prevent others in the household reading it as reading is forbidden for most. Although he is able to live a better life than the majority of Gilead's Citizens, his freedoms are still limited.
