President James Polk was a supporter of the Manifest Destiny, so he intended to expand America's territory. Polk planned to annex Texas. Polk sent James Slidell to attempt to buy the land of New Mexico, California, and the disputed border of Texas, but Mexico refused to meet with the American representative.
Determined to acquire the land, he sent American troops to Texas in January of 1846 to provoke the Mexicans into war. When the Mexicans fired on American troops in April of1846 in disputed territory. Polk had the excuse he needed. He told Congress that American blood had been shed on American soil On April 25 of 1846, Congress declared war on Mexico.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo brought official end to the Mexican-American War. It established the Rio Grande, as the U.S.- Mexican border. Upon its signing, America gained an additional 525,000 square miles to United States territory, including the land that makes up all or parts of present-day Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming for just $15 million. Guadalupe Hidalgo is a city adjacent to Mexico's capital.
