Hi, my name is Abbie and I am going to be discussing three topics that stood out to me in my Culture, Society, and Mental Health Anthropology class. I'm also going to discuss how they relate to abnormality, diagnosis, and control.
The topics I will be discussing are idioms of distress, drugs, and culture.

Idioms of distress were discussed in our section on ab/normal. We discussed how idioms of distress are culturally bound ways of experiencing and expressing distress.
Definition: Alternatives in the expression of psychological distress (Nichter)
Idiom of distress
Ab/normalIdioms of distress are usually abnormal behaviors or symptoms. For example, fasting in Havik culture may mean someone is not doing well mentally.
DiagnosisIdioms of distress help identify psychological distress. Once it is identified that the physical symptoms or behaviors are caused by something psychological, diagnosis can begin.
ControlAs stated above, idioms of distress signify psychological problems. One these psychological problems are identified after observing the idioms of distress, treatment is used to control the symptoms.

Drugs were discussed under the topic of control. In relation to mental health, drugs are used to treat mental illness.
DiagnosisThe drugs that a patient is prescribed relies largely on the patient's diagnosis. For example if a patient is diagnosed with depression they may receive antidepressants.

ControlDrugs can be used to control individuals by making them "normal".
Ab/normalDrugs are used to treat mental illness, which is seen as abnormal. Therefore, drugs are meant to make someone normal.
DiagnosisBecause culture defines what is normal, this affects the way diagnosis is given.
Culture was mainly discussed under the topic of diagnosis. Culture plays a large role in how mental illness is perceived, diagnosed, and treated.
Ab/normalA group's culture defines what they see as normal or abnormal.
ControlBased on a culture's priorities, control will be expressed in different ways. For example, the U.S. prioritizes work which may cause employers to push workers past mental wellness.
As we discussed, idioms of distress, drugs, and culture were important topics that related to all 3 of our main topics of ab/normal, diagnosis, and control. Thanks for listening!
