Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall was born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1908. He would grow up to be the first African American Supreme Court Justice
I was born on July 2, 1908 in Baltimore. I could just tell I was going to change the world.
Thurgood Marshall’s parents constantly motivated him and his brother to learn, and put a large emphasis on education throughout their childhood. When Thurgood was in trouble at school, his parents punished him with more education in a sense, by making him memorize sections of the US Constitution.
I was always a great student intelligence-wise, but I got in trouble for misbehaving a lot. I was restless, but I was really smart. I always thrived in debates.
His grandfather was an enslaved man who escaped from the South during the Civil War. His grandfather’s history likely had an impact on his career choices, becoming a Supreme Court Justice who fought to abolish segregation and the Jim Crow laws.
My grandfather was a runaway slave, and he inspired my interests in law. Segregation was still prominent, so I wanted to make a change to the world.
