  • On June 20 of 1789, the members of the Third Estate took the Tennis Court Oath and demanded certain rights from the king.
  • We vow not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established.
  • On July 14 of 1789, the revolutionaries (mostly craftsmen and store owners who belonged to the 3rd estate) stormed the Bastille. This violent attack lead to the start of the French Revolution.
  • On August 26 of 1789, the National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of man and of the Citizen.

  • In 1793 the Reign of Terror begun. Radicals led by Maximilien Robespierre took over the government.
  • Terror will be the order of the day!
  • In this dark and violent period, people were executed if radicals suspected they were not being loyal to the revolution. Thousands of people died, including King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
  • The Reign of Terror came to an end on 1794, and a year later the directory was formed and took control of the government. But on November 9 of 1799, Napoleon Bonaparte, a military leader, overthrew the directory, named himself leader of France and established the French Cosulate bringing an end to the French Revolution.
