- I grew up in East St. Louis and I was extremely poor.
- When I was 19 years old I moved to New York to become a dancer and I became extremely respected and well known.
- I grew tired of the racism in the United States so I moved to Paris in 1921.
- I travelled back to the United States in the 1940's and was discouraged by the segregation still happening. It was not happening in Paris.
- After my performance I returned to Paris where I lived the rest of my life.
- I died in 1975 and I am buried in Paris.
