Oh it was amazing! I have to tell you all about it!
Hey Karen.
how was your field trip to the science centre??
Hey Drew!
It was amazing! We learned a lot about our bodies first line of defence, the immune system.
Okay, Drew let me give you an analogy. Think about a prisoner breaking out of prison.
I always hear about the immune system but I don't really know anything about it.
In my analogy, the prisoner is the pathogen. Both trying to break through something
A pathogen is something that is trying to enter your body and infect your cells.
So if pathogens are the prisoners trying to break out, what are the guards?
The guards would be the bodies macrophage. Their job is to locate foreign bodies and "eat them".
in my analogy, an antigen would be a police officer noticing a prisoner has escaped. Therefore beggining a response
An antigen is a foreign body that induces the immune system response
Skin is a waterproof barrier that blocks out pathogens. So in my analogy the skin would be like the jail cell, keeping a prisoner from escaping.
When it comes to the first line of defense, the skin plays a very large role.
Another first line of defense is mucous. They trap the pathogen from entering in your nose and in the blood stream
In a prison break, the mucous would be the alarm, trying to stop the prisoner from causing any harm
Just like when the guards catch the prisoner, they are able to prevent the prisoner from doing anymore harm
The final line of defense are Lysosomes(tears and saliva). They prevent any more damage from the pathogen
Killer T-cells kill any cell containing the pathogen, so they are like a SWAT team being called to capture the prisoner
The Helper T-Cells activate the killer T-cells and the B-cells.
While B-cells secrete antibiotics which are like the weapons vault giving weapons(antibiotics)
The memory B-cells job is to remember the certain pathogen and if that pathogen comes again they are able to stop is faster
Finally we have memory B-cells
So a memory B-cell would be like a wanted poster so everyone knows the certain prisoner and it would make capturing it more faster
Wow looks like that field trip taught you a thing or two!
Well come to think about it...Yeah I did learn alot!!
Well, that's just your immune systems first response. Well I got to go, have to teach the immune system to a classmate
Oh jeez, i think im starting to get the sniffles
Oh it was amazing! I have to tell you all about it!
Who knew my body fighting pathogens can make me feel so gross
