"We just brought him home from the Remand Center."
"No! How is this possible? My Chase wouldn't do this. He is obviously sick!"

How did it all come to this? Richard Cross, a guy Chase doesn't know, is now lying here fighting for his life.
Police arrive at Gordie's house with Chase. This is the first time they'd seen him after he disappeared 3 weeks ago. Chase was hauld out of a Meth house with lice dropping down his shoulders and crank craters all over his face. This introduced their parent's reaction to it all, his mom in denial and dad in pure shock trying to make sense of it.
"Oh no, I'm going in there with you. There is no way I'll let you go by yourself."
"NO! They won't let me in if they see you. Give me the money, I'll be back in 5 minutes."
Chase was arrested for aggravated assault. He hit a glass bottle on the back of Richard Cross's head, leaving him in a coma with life threatening injuries. This event in the book ties with Chase's character because it shows how much drugs are effecting his actions.
I can't believe Dad called the police. I wonder how long my guitar will keep Chase high.
"Thank you for letting us know."
"Thank God! He's still alive..."
After the incident with Richard Cross, Gordie goes to the hospital to visit him. He went to apologizes on behalf of Chase. This shows Gordie's character and how he is nothing like his brother. This is also when Gordie finds out Richard is a father because of the cards on the wall.
Chase and Gordie go to DC and Ratchett to pay off the debt Chase owes them. When they get there, Chase insists that he goes in alone. After 20 minutes of waiting for Chase, Gordies enters the house. To his surprise, Chase, along with the money was nowhere to be found.
A recent break in at their house leads Gordie's dad to believe it was Chase. He calls the police straight away to inform them about the situation. When their mom comes home at midnight, she is thankful to hear about the break in because it indicates Chase is still alive.
"I suspect that this was my son, Chase. Here is a list of things I believe are missing."
