- Holden Caulfield here. If you really want to here about it, I'll start of telling of what happened to me last Christmas just before I got pretty run down and had to come out here and take it easy.
- Sleep tight, ya morons!
- Holden Caulfield is in a mental hospital, he is telling of what happened to him last Christmas.
- Ah Jane Gallagher
- I'm really starting to hate him.
- Holden got expelled from Pency prep school in Agerstown, his fourth boarding school and he is not scheduled to return home until Wednesday. He thinks everyone around him or people he meets are phonies. He doesn't want to hang around Pency no more, because it made him sad and depressed so he decided that he will leave three days early to New York before he has to go home and tell his parents the bad news about his school.

- You give me a royal pain in the butt, if you want to know the truth
- I'm really starting to hate her.
- His desire for human contact increases so when reaches he considers calling several people but for various reasons he decided not to. As he is in New York he starts to think a lot about his late brother, Allie. He passed away from leukemia three years ago. It seems like he still feels Allie's loss strongly and has this bundle of guilt inside him.

- Holden spends a few days in New York, walking around thinking, reminiscing and trying to find out where he belongs. However, everyone he met in New York are either phonies, strange, or bastards and everyone of the woman he tried to make dates with he failed. It was just really hard for him to make friends in general. So he ends up isolating himself and became more and more depressed, he even wanted to commit suicide. He tries to cover all he was feeling with smoking and drinking.
- After, he got punched by the elevator guy (pimp), Maurice for not giving the extra $5 to cover up the total cost for the prostitute, Sunny which is $10 and for insulting him. holden goes on a date with Sally hayes, (who he thinks is a phony) where he reveals he wants to run away with her. Sally doesn't take that well and they both ended up getting annoyed with each other and Holden leaves without her.
- Holden goes home to visit his 10 yr old sister, phoebe. she realizes that he is home 2 days early and comes to the conclusion that he got kicked out. He explained why he got kicked out, and all the things he hated in Pency. She responded by saying he hates everything and they argued about him hating everything. Then she asked what he wants to be in life and he tells her he wants to be a 'catcher in the rye.' -stand at the edge of a cliff and catch the children when they come close to falling off.
