Freud believed that everyone had three energies called the id or the pleasure principle that dealt with needs and desires, the superego which was your moral principles and internalized rules of society, and the ego which was the conscious control over the personality. Personality is developed based on a balancing act of all three.
Eysenck was a proponent of factor analysis meaning that certain personality factors tend to cluster next to each other. He believed that there are two dimensions or personality: the first is extraversion (energies from outer world) or introversion (energies from inner world) and the second was stability or instability. I fall into the extraverted and stable traits.
They thought that there were 5 main personality traits: openness which is curious and innovative, conscientious which is organized and motivated, extraversion which is cheerful, agreeable which is collaborative, and neuroticism which is worrisome. These traits can be observed at early stages and tend to remian stable over time.
