  • During the time period around 1917-1921, Americans began fearing the spread of communism and anarchism and would act against it whenever they could
  • After the Haymarket Affair occurred in 1886, Americans had been on the watch for any more threats that could come
  • When the Bolsheviks won the revolution at the start of the 1920s, many American citizens became concerned with the spread of communism, especially in the labor movement
  • In February of 1919, the Overman Committee, which was created to investigate German subversion, became an organization to investigate any dangers to the US
  • In April 1919, packages rigged with explosives were sent to politicians and businessmen by anarchists. After a couple exploded, the packages were stopped before they arrived to their destination. The attackers were immigrants which frightened the public even more
  • Communist and anarchists, in December 1919, rode the Buford, and were deported back to Russia. The Red Scare would end when Attorney General Palmer was wrong with one of his accusations, proving the threat was not as big as previously thought
  • During this Red Scare, Americans had a reason to be scared because they wanted to stay safe and keep the democratic that ran the country
  • After multiple terrorist attacks, raids started to occur across the nation called Palmer Raids to end the violence
