- In 1854 Stephen A. Douglas proposed the Kansas-Nebraska Act because of the idea of western expansion. He wanted a railroad through Chicago and to open new segments in Kanas hoping to continue the idea of the Transcontinental Railroad. So his idea was to split. Territory into the Kanas and Nebraska states and then let them vote for whether they want to be a slave state or not using a popular solvent. However, this would repeal the Missouri Compromise becuase Kanaswas on the northern side of the Missouri Compromise lines so This would destroy the Missouri line and then would allow for slavery to be permanent in Kanas even though it is in the north. So whoever moved to Kanas first would choose if it was a slave or free state.

- The act was passed in May. However, the Northerners were unhappy because Douglas betrayed the Missouri Compromise. Now it was up to the Northerners to decide if slavery should be in Kanas or not for Douglas was threatened and harassed for betraying the Missouri Compromise. So after people showed their anger, the race for possession began. Both the North and South people started moving to Kanas to deice the fate of slavery. This began the Pro-slavery and anti-slavery conflict

- After both sides moved in quickly. They began to vote on what state should Kansas be. Even people who weren't a part of the Kansas settlement came to help the South they were known as the border ruffians who came to help their fellow Southerners vote for slavery in Kanas. So now you have people who crossed the Kansas border only to help vote for slavery in Kanas. This is not looking good for the North…
