My beginning screen will include a picture of the extremely busy airport that I took during summer of 2021. It will emphasize the fact that citizens are scrambling to leave their home in an attempt to escape, even if it’s just for a while. Some people in the airport were leaving forever, while others were just leaving for a month or two. However, the airport was super busy.
I will then show a picture that I took during 2016. It will show the true beauty of Lebanon. I may use a picture of downtown or the beach, where there are happy families and people present. This picture will serve as a guide. Viewers will be able to understand just how beautiful and civil Lebanon was. When the viewers see the pictures to come, they will be shocked at how quickly the country took a turn.
I am going to talk about the currency rate change. For many years, $1.00 USD used to be worth 1,500 in Lira, the Lebanese currency. Today, $1.00 = 21,000 Lebanese pounds. The cost of living has gone up and the currency has gone down, thus leaving families struggling to eat. Many parents have been unable to afford formula for their babies, and even bread and cheese for their families. Food prices have become so high that people are starving. For example, a jar of Nutella has gotten so expensive that it can no longer be found at most grocery stores. The majority of people cannot afford it, so there is not enough demand for store owners to continue ordering stock. It is now seen as a luxury.
Next, I will display a picture that I took during 2021. In the image, you will see an infant sleeping on a piece of cardboard at the side of a busy road as his mother begs passing cars for financial help. It shows how corrupt the government is and how deeply the people are truly suffering. In my opinion, this picture is absolutely critical for my project. The picture speaks volumes. There is no way to explain the feeling that a person will feel. When we passed by, my mother broke down in tears. She felt that she had seen too much. The last time she had been in Lebanon, which was actually not much longer before the summer, the situation was nowhere near as bad as it became.
I will then conduct an interview with my mother. As someone who grew up in Lebanon and visited quite frequently, I would like to ask her questions about the change. Some questions may include the way she remembers Lebanon, how the change made her feel, what the worst thing she saw was, etc.
To end the project, I will include ways to help out. I may include donation links or ways to send supplies. I also want to include pictures that depict how much help is needed. Despite being in a crisis and already being super overpopulated, Lebanon has accepted millions of Syrian refugees over the years. This basically means that there are even more people who are in need of help.
