- Chrysostom died because of Marcela!

- Don Quixote and Sancho Panza were invited by the goatherds as they boil goat meat for dinner. Don Quixote invites Sancho Panza to eat with him for everyone is equal in knight-errantry. Right after the meal, Don Quixote makes a speech about the golden age of mankind but none of the goatherds understands him. Later on, a young man arrives to sing a love ballad he wrote. Afterward, a goatherd noticed Don Quixote’s wound around his ear so the goatherd applied rosemary to it.
- A boy suddenly arrives announcing the death of Chrysostom, a student-shepherd. It is said that he died because of his love for a beautiful shepherdess named Marcela. Don Quixote asked one of the goatherds named Pedro to tell more about Chrysostom. Pedro stated that he was a wealthy man, a student at Salamanca University, and a brilliant poet. However, Chrysostom decided to dress like shepherds so he could follow Marcela. Many young men fall in love with Marcela and wish to marry her but she has no intentions to entertain any man or give them any favors. Pedro invited Don Quixote to go to the funeral and Don Quixote agreed.
- On the way to the funeral, one of the travelers named Vivaldo asked Don Quixote about his strange outfit and he answered that it is because he is a knight errant whose duty is to help those in need. Afterward, they all concluded that Don Quixote is insane. At the funeral, Ambrosio declared that Chrysostom’s burial place is the same place where he proposed to Marcela and she rejected him which results in his death. Vivaldo agreed and reports Marcela’s cruelty as a warning. Vivaldo also asked to read some of Chrysostom’s writing and Ambrosio agreed but he said that he will burn the rest. Vivaldo read aloud to others Chrysostom’s last writing entitled “Lay of Despair.”

- Suddenly, Marcela appears at the funeral to defend herself against those people who blamed her for Chrysostom’s death. She said that she is not responsible to love those men who love her. She told him that she never plans to marry any man and chooses to live freely. After her speech, Marcela disappears back into the forest. Some men at the funeral decided to follow her but Don Quixote prevented them from doing so and said that they should respect her. Don Quixote plans to find Marcela to offer his services. Finally, they buried Chrysostom.
- Don Quixote fails to find Marcela and decided to rest near a stream. His horse Rocinante tries to mate with a flock of mares and the owners of the mares beat Rocinante. Don Quixote plans to avenge and believes that he is equal to a hundred men. Don Quixote and Sancho go after the men and ended up being beaten. Don Quixote believes that the Gods have punished him for fighting an ordinary men and stated that from now on, Sancho will have to fight them.
- Don Quixote wishes to find a place for them to rest and they have found an inn. Sancho insisted that it is an inn while Don Quixote believes it is a castle. In here, they are welcomed and met an innkeeper, his wife and daughter, and a lady named Maritornes. They eventually prepared Don Quixote and Sancho’s room.
