- The selfishness of the characters motivates many of the novel's worst actions. To pursue their own pleasure or avoid facing justice, characters disregard the well-being of others. However, a healthy and happy community necessitates consideration for others.
- Hannah's tapes repeatedly draw attention to the negative consequences of rumours. Rumours shape her reputation, and how others treat her is influenced by them. People take advantage of her as her reputation grows. The chain of events leading to Hannah's suicide begins with a rumour.
- There is a story behind every person. There is a reason why they are the way they are. Think about that, and respect them for who they are. Remember we can always find a place to feel good and treat people with kindness.
